It had seemed like the perfect gift, because Remus couldn't change Sirius's family, but maybe he could make things a bit better. So he had spent months brewing in secret, making himself unobtrusive in a corner of the Potions lab while Slughorn was busy with students he expected to become something far greater than a werewolf.

And finally Sirius's birthday had arrived, but Remus had no one on whom he dared test the Felix Felicis except their friends. So James was out, having finally convinced Lily to walk down by the lake with him, and Lily had been wearing a secret smile when she waved goodbye to Remus. And Peter had gone to the Astronomy Tower with a Slytherin fifth-year who had apparently believed he could help her with her charts.

Which meant that Sirius would have none of his friends around that evening but Remus, and Remus was still feeling sore from the last full moon. He didn't even sneak out with Sirius to Hogsmeade, but stayed in the dormitory in his bed, trying not to think about how Sirius would probably find someone more fun with whom to spend his birthday.

"Look what I got," announced Sirius when he finally returned to their room, holding a large package from Honeyduke's and dropping it on Remus's pillow. "Uncle Alphard sent me some money. I think we should celebrate."

Sirius didn't even like chocolate much, but he knew it made Remus feel better when he was recovering from his transformation. Instead Remus felt worse than ever. "I made you a present, but I think I ruined it..." he started to say when Sirius interrupted:

"You made me a present?" Sirius grinned widely. He knew that Remus didn't have much money, and he always made a show of appreciating whatever used book or Quidditch poster Remus managed to find for his birthdays. "It isn't illegal, is it?" Sirius had tried to produce ale for James's last birthday and almost blew up the Shrieking Shack.

"That depends how you use it," shrugged Remus, blushing, as he sat up to hand Sirius the bottle. "It's Felix Felicis. But I tested it on James and Peter, and now none of them are here for your birthday..."

Sirius hadn't stopped grinning. "That's lucky, then," he declared cryptically, flopping across Remus's bed and studying the golden liquid. "Did you test any on yourself, Moony?"

"Yes," admitted Remus, blushing more. "But I don't think I'm very lucky. Just not getting caught swiping the bottle from Slughorn was..."

He stopped explaining because he couldn't move his mouth, because Sirius's lips were on his. Sirius was kissing him.

"Oh," Remus said, or moaned really, when Sirius finally let him up to breathe. Not that Remus really wanted to breathe, since kissing Sirius was better.

"Happy birthday," Sirius laughed, which was silly because it was his birthday, not Remus's. Only it felt like Remus's birthday and Christmas rolled into one.

Then Sirius kissed him again, and it only got better.
